Hope you are enjoying the Spring weather.
Last March 11-15, @ohn_mar_win had a mini challenge called 5 Days of Spring Blooms to celebrate the season and paint five different flowers. I enjoyed doing the Autumn one last year, so this would be a fun challenge to get into the Spring season.
This time, I played on two sketchbooks except for the last prompt. I did a warm-up on a separate sketchbook, and the final ones were in the same accordion journal, where I did the autumn flowers. I’ve posted all of these in my IG feed, but this is worth writing a blog post about. So here are my Spring Blooms.
Day 1: Blossom
Day 2: Hyacinths
Day 3: Daffodils
Day 4: Tulips
Day 5: Forsythia
Sometimes, I end up liking the warmup sketches more than the “final” versions. I don’t know whether it is because I work looser on those and then get a bit “scared” when I get to the final version. However, with the forsythias, I forgot to do warmups and directly did the watercolor sketches, and for this, I was working off a limited palette of Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolours that I picked up from Osaka on a recent
As I reflect on the challenge, my favourites are the blossoms (Day 1) and the forsythias (Day 5). Which ones are yours?
Do you do warmup sketches when painting watercolours?
Thank you for stopping by.

Love the cherry blossoms, they have a delicate character to them. What a great challenge.
